"Successful portable dentistry in the developing world"
A long time has passed since our first trip to this community. Our facility has changed, our treatment capacity has expanded, our equipment has become more sophisticated and our circle of friends has increased... But some things never change. Here is a video of a young girl who never smiled. The concern in the community was that she would never get married. I am happy to report that Esther finally tied the knot.
Six years ago I arrived in the Abayudaya village of Nabugoye in eastern Uganda with a small portable dental unit treating a handful of school children in the Hadassah Primary School. Our April 2019 expedition has just returned from Nabugoye where our team of volunteers has completed the largest, most comprehensive dental field mission in the history of Uganda. We offered dental care to well over 1,500 children and adults providing a wide range of treatment modalities including radiographs, endodontic therapy and children's specialty services. In addition, we served freshly "shechted" kosher goat and halal meat with beans and rice to our many patients for lunch. This provided the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities, especially the children, with much needed dietary protein. Many thanks to the 19 American volunteers and the large Abayudaya support group that made this dream a reality.
Volunteers are always welcome to spend time in beautiful Nabugoye. You will experience the richness of life in Uganda and meet a community of extraordinary people. The talents you possess will be greatly appreciated. Past volunteers have included dentists, dental hygienists, scientists, engineers, educators, business entrepreneurs, students, military personnel and those just seeking a unique cultural experience. The Outreach Center administers to the dental needs of all members of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. All volunteers regardless of their backgrounds are encouraged to take part in our mission. Everyone who has visited this community has described it as a transforming experience.

In an historical event our host Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, the leader of the Abayudaya Community, was successful in his bid to be elected to the Uganda Parliament.
